Sessions Announces Crackdown, Kelly Shakes The White House Staff
This week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is set to unveil a huge crackdown on leakers, in the most recent indication the administration is urging to run a tighter ship as John Kelly tighten the reins as chief of staff of the White House.
One of the original tasks given to the ex-chief of Homeland Security and general in retirement will be plugging the White House leaks that his predecessor fought to stanch.
“If Reince [Priebus] couldn’t control those leaks … then he was the one who was ultimately responsible, and General Kelly was brought in to make sure those leaks do not continue,” former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday.
Kelly, with his evident role in Monday’s dismissal of Anthony Scaramucci as communications director, has already shown he’ll fire staff members he considers to be problematic.
However, beyond the White House attempt to stop nettlesome leaks about behind-the-curtain arguing, Sessions is set to appear with a declaration on criminal leak probes– especially, regarding news reports that published confidential intelligence material, based on officials who have been questioned on the issue.
As sources informed Fox News, Sessions intends on conveying a press conference on the topic of leaks on Friday. The announcement may offer more of a review of what the DOJ wishes to achieve rather than specific prosecutions at this stage.
A month ago, a report written by Republicans on the Senate’s homeland security panel cautioned that the Trump administration experienced an “alarming” amount of media leaks that posed a possible national security threat. The 24-page report was called “State Secrets: How and Avalanche of Media Leaks is Harming National Security,” analyzed that the Trump administration has had about one leak on a daily basis.
